Canadian Intellectual Property Office's (CIPO) stated mission is "to accelerate Canada's economic development by fostering the use of intellectual property systems and the exploitation of intellectual property information. It does this by encouraging invention, innovation and creativity in Canada; administering the intellectual property systems in Canada (patents, trade-marks, copyrights, industrial designs, and integrated circuit topographies); and promoting Canada's international intellectual property interests."
Intellectual Property Policy Directorate (IPPD): Within December 28, 2007or the development of Canada's intellectual property policies. IPPD advises senior departmental officials and the Minister of Industry on intellectual property matters, and together with other interested federal departments, develops specific policy proposals and legislative initiatives in these areas with a view to providing appropriate levels of intellectual property protection in Canada. Working closely with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, it has provided and continues to provide key Canadian representation on intellectual property issues in international trade for example, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Group of Economies.
Patent Medicine Prices Review Board (PMPRB) is an independent quasi-judicial body, created in 1987 under the Patent Act to protect consumer interests in light of increased patent protection for pharmaceuticals. Its mandate is three-fold:
- to ensure that the prices charged by manufacturers of patented medicines in Canada are not excessive;
- to report annually to Parliament on the price trends of all medicines in Canada; and
- to report annually to Parliament on the ratio of research & development expenditures to sales by patentees.
Rules and Regulations development and implementations are described in the Patent act, s.12
(2) Any rule or regulation made by the Governor in Council has the same force and effect as if it had been enacted herein
